Siobhan Mlacak - Photographer

In February 2001 I went to Oswiecim, Poland, better known by the German name of Auschwitz.
I must admit that I was drawn here for reasons I have yet to comprehend.
Unsure of why I needed to come, of what I would find and of how I might react, I decided nevertheless to follow my instincts and make the trip.

Overwhelmed at first, I left my camera in its bag and moved silently through the concentration camps of
KL Auschwitz I in Oswiecim and KL Auschwitz II – Birkenau in Brzezinka, 3 kilometers away.
Eventually I began to photograph my surroundings and was struck by an odd and quiet beauty that seemed to linger behind the brutality.
Although I am uncomfortable with this notion of beauty, I cannot deny that it was somehow present in this place of extraordinary suffering and sadness.

I came here to witness for myself a dark page in history.  Here is what I saw.
Respectfully,
Siobhan
